- Maintains continually updated knowledge of treatment protocols and methods in a constantly changing environment.
- Makes timely high quality medical and life/death decisions within limits of training and certification.
- Rapidly assesses nature and extent of injuries and illnesses to establish and prioritize medical procedures to be followed.
- Fully coordinates activities and actions with all other involved emergency staff members including with other agencies.
- Responds to instructions from emergency medical dispatcher and drives specially equipped emergency vehicle to specified location.
- Remains alert to dangerous situations to both self, crew and patients for periods of twenty-four (24) hours.
- Monitors communication equipment to maintain contact with dispatcher.
- Maintains updated knowledge of streets, roads and structure locations throughout the community.
- Concisely and accurately describes patient conditions to physicians and hospital staff to expedite treatments.
- Removes or assists in removal of victims from scene of accident or catastrophe.
- Determines nature and extent of illness or injury, or magnitude of catastrophe, to establish first aid procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance, basing decisions on statements of persons involved, examination of victim or victims, and knowledge of emergency medical practice.
- Administers prescribed first aid treatment at site of emergency, or in specially equipped vehicle, performing such activities as application of splints, administration of oxygen or intravenous injections, treatment of wounds or medical conditions, and administration of emergency medical treatments.
- Communicates with professional medical personnel at emergency treatment facility to obtain instructions regarding further treatment and to arrange for reception of victims at treatment facility.
- Removes victims from vehicles, buildings, and exterior environments and transfers patients to various treatment centers.
- Completely avoids improper treatments or medication administration to patients to prevent adverse or fatal outcomes.
- Exceptional ability to write/document and obtain information critical to efficient charting procedures including patient histories, current ailments and billing information.
- Assists treatment center admitting personnel to obtain and record information related to victims' vital statistics and circumstances of emergency.
- Maintains vehicles and medical and communication equipment and replenishes first aid equipment and supplies.
- Assists in controlling crowds, protecting valuables, or performing other duties at emergency scenes.
- Assists professional medical personnel in emergency treatment administered at medical facility.
- Demonstrates ability to regularly change priorities to accomplish all tasks despite frequent interruptions.
- Demonstrates ability to clearly communicate, both orally and in writing, while performing all essential functions.
- Performs other special projects and duties as assigned.
- High school graduation at a minimum.
- Active EMT Certification (National/State), CPR for the Healthcare Provider, EVOC, and NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800 certifications.
- Demonstrated ability to relate to diverse cultures and specifically the Gila River Community and/or other Native American cultures.
- Interest in medical subjects, patient services/care, and customer service.
- Prior medical environment work experience is preferred.
Overview
Respond to emergent and non-emergent 911 calls in an almost immediate timeframe, and assesses/cares for patients experiencing both emergencies and chronic medical conditions by performing the following duties personally. Responsible for ensuring that all critical tasks are fulfilled on a timely basis.
